The Australian Numismatic Society

Meeting 979  11th October, 1999.

Attendance: There were nine visitors and one visitor present.

General Business and Discussions:
1: AGM minutes from 1998 to be read as these were unavailable at the AGM held last month.
These were read with no dissent.
2: Treasurer’s Report to be presented, as our Treasurer was unavailable at the last meeting.
No reports were presented as our Treasurer is still away.
3: Next numismatic meeting to be held on November, 1999 which is the auction.
Items for the auction should be taken to Colin at Noble Numismatics or brought to the
next meeting.
4: Any new business or announcements.
4.1: Report has been printed - members should expect delivery over the next few days.
4.2: Burton’s  Antiques  Fair is on next Saturday at Canterbury Race course.
4.3: Australian Coin & Banknote Magazine  have notified use that a club listing is to cost $75 per
year and includes a subscription to the magazine. Discussion has  indicated that  this is difficult to
see the value as the service is generally more of benefit to the  magazine’s readers as opposed to the
clubs. We note that the Australian Coin Review  and the  Australian Coin and Banknote magazines
currently  have no club listings since this idea has surfaced.
4.4: What to do with declining membership at the meetings. Tonight is a good example as there are
nine members and one visitor present. This should be brought up at the next meeting. Is there a
current drought for numismatic items and interest? Interest in numismatics seems to come in waves.
Could we present, in consultation with the Powerhouse Museum, a regular internet access at
meetings?
4.5: Today is the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of the Boer War (1899-1902).
5: Items of numismatic interest and forum topic - 1800 to 1850.

FORUM - Coins minted between 1800 to 1850.
T.H.
1: England - Victoria Godless Florin - 1849 Proof
2: England - Victoria Decimal System Florin (tenth of a pound) Proof ( a lovely coin!)
3: England - George III ¼ Guinea 1810 Gold
4: England - George III Crown 1819.
There was some discussion on the relationship between gold and silver values -that silver is no
longer really a precious metal AU$7 per ounce verses AU$420 per ounce for gold.
